A New Twist on an Old Classic

I love to find books at the most random places. Quite some time ago I found these two books at the dollar tree of all places. I purchased them without reading them, but I ended up being very pleasantly surprised on how much I loved them!

First up we have A Wolfs Tale-

This book has a great twist of how the wolf is looked at AFTER the village of pigs has been told about the big bad wolf for many years. It is a great reminder that a person’s relatives or the race effects how the person should be treated.

The wolf finds a birthday party invite that floats up to his house on top of the hill. He wants to go! Who wouldn’t want to go?!

He goes down the hill, knocks on doors and asks for directions to the party. Can you guess what all the pigs think the wolf is doing in their village? Well, he is not there to blow down the houses! I love the end of this book and think it is a great addition to any library!

Tortoise vs Hare- a rematch

We all know the classic story where the Hare stops and takes a nap instead of continuing on with the race but in this case, the Hare does not take a nap! Who do you think will win? Is there ANY way tortoise will win if Hare is really fast? There is a funny twist to how the winner wins! The creativity in this story made me chuckle as I read it.

Princess Pink of the Land of Fake-Believe

There are four books in this illustrated early chapter book series and my Daughter is obsessed!  We had three that I bought used in a large lot and BEGGED me to get her the last in the series. When the package arrived she literally squealed!

The first book in the series starts off with a karate loving girl who does not like pink getting magically transported into a world of fake-believe. When she is transported, she suddenly becomes Princess Pink with bright PINK hair!

Hilarious characters are in each of the stories… many your kiddos will recognize including the Big Bad Wolf, Jack from the bean stock, the Three Little Pigs and Little Red.

Activity Idea

Ask, how can we adapt a classic story into something new? Let’s think of some classic stories.

  • Pinocchio

  • Rapunzel

  • Snow White and the seven dwarfs

  • The boy who cried wolf

  • The tortoise and the hare

  • Midas and the golden touch

Now, how can we change the story?

We can change how the characters look. For example, maybe make the story about a story about a Snow-White polar bear and the seven penguins.

What about the plot of the story?

Instead of everything Midas touches turning to gold, he could touch money and it turns into comically large items! Imagine finding a penny picking it up and it turning into a puppy! I would find that funny, but I tend to have a weird sense of humor.

Finally let’s turn this into an activity. For the creative writer set up the story. For the artist how do you draw the main character. For the older kid have them make a new book! Or put on a play! There are plenty of classic stories that could always use a new twist.

The joy of children is that they are extremely creative! I love to listen to stories my daughter comes up with and even as a toddler she would come up with the silliest stories! Have fun with these ideas and do not forget to video some of these stories. You will love them as the kids get older…. AWWW, to be a kid again!
