18 Fun Books About School

Being a homeschool family, going to school looks different for us day to day and definitely not a traditional “sit in a classroom look”. I feel that it is beneficial to expose what a traditional school is while reading books. There is also more to school then a classroom. Relationships with other students is a huge part of school! It is also important for children to know and understand that a variety of emotions are normal and healthy to have. Many of these books deal with the fears and concerns children may have going in to a new environment. The joys of homeschooling for us are that we meet a wide variety of other kids at classes, sports and the park. It is important to me taht my daughter is empathic with what emotions and fears they may have! Plus sometimes it is fun to read about experiences we are not used to!

This picture book has a great concept! What would elementary school be like if the Greek gods grew up together navigating childhood? Medusa does not feel welcome when she starts school but the class learns to accept others differences. It’s a cute story with unlikely characters. Definitely worth a read!

The Snow Day from the Black Lagoon (Black Lagoon Adventures, No. 11)

Another series I loved to read as a kid, the Black Lagoon series has 27 short chapter books that are silly and so unrealistic, they are a great way to add entertainment to your day! The snow day from the black lagoon is my favorite, maybe because I never had a snow day. There is only about 60 pages per book and recommended for 7-9 year olds but I think older kids could enjoy them as a quick read too.

There are 19 books in this series, they are a quick read at only 32 pages but have the same funny story lines! I also love the illustrations. They have a lot of color, cartoon style and just goofy! These books are perfect for second, third or even older kids who want a quick, silly read.

The Class
I originally bought this book when my fourth grader was in preschool! She has loved this book ever since. I was drawn to this book because it showed a variety of kids in different stages of getting ready for class. The pictures are a perfect illistration to accompany the text. My favorite kids are the “five that cannot find matching socks”! The kids are a variety of races, different styles and are a wonderful representation of what kids look like!

School Of Fish

Who does not love a good book about fish?! I seem to be drawn to children’s books with ocean animals as the main characters. This easy reader is a perfect book to share with a child who may be worried about what other kid will think about them. The main character is looking forward to playing with new friends but is worried that he is going to be too slow. In the end he has nothing to worry about and has made a new friend.

Monster Math School Time
We randomly came across this book at the Friends of the Library bookstore about two years ago. D was in second grade at the time and I was surprised that she was so interested in getting it! I originally wrote it off as being to young for her, she was already reading chapter books by then. It taught me a valuable lesson; do not judge a book by the cover! The premise of the book is simple, it tells what time the monsters do their activities throughout the day. A very cool aspect of this book is that there are both analog and digital clocks on each page! I think it is important that kids learn how to read both types of clocks and it something we have worked on since we starter homeschooling. This book also has great activities at the back of the book.

Frank and Lucky Get Schooled

Frank and Lucky is such a great picture book for kids of ANY age! It shows the two of them going through their normal lives and how school subjects are practical in the “real world”. My favorite is when Lucky gets sprayed by a skunk and they learn about chemistry and smell molecules. There are many wonderful tid-bits that can lead the reader to wonder what parts of their life relate to subjects in school. How do you do math everyday, hat about geography? The more times you read this book the more discussions you will have.
